Major site works commenced in January to install the weighbridge and construct the building shell. In mid January volunteers completed site clearance and excavated the pit and building foundations. During a very wet week the sides of the pit were supported and concrete formwork manufactured and installed. Following approval of the excavations by the Building Inspector reinforcement was cut to size and laid prior to a 12m³ concrete pour on the following Saturday morning.
The weighbridge ironwork has been blast cleaned and primed following chipping off of heavy corrosion and scale. The steelwork has then been painted in bitumastic to help preserve and prolong its life.
Contractors have built the pit walls and the building walls up to damp proof course level. The volunteers then returned to backfill around the pit and install the refurbished weigh table with the aid of a loadall (a lifting crane).
On the building itself power and telecoms ducts have been laid together with a water supply pipe. The floor has been backfilled, compacted, covered with sand and then a damp proof membrane laid over the top. Following approval of the damp proof measures by the Building Inspector floor insulation and the concrete sub floor have been laid by volunteers.
For the next few weeks the contractor will return to complete the brick and blockwork to roof level before the volunteers construct the roof, install windows and doors to make the building water tight. All that will then remain is the fitting out and commissioning which should be complete by the end of June.
